Secretary McMahon Tours Three Minnesota Schools as Returning Education to the States Tour Reaches Its 44th Stop

U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon visited Minnesota on October 14 as part of her Returning Education to the States Tour, the U.S. Department of Education announced. Minnesota was the 44th stop on the fifty-state tour.
McMahon began at Great Oaks Academy in Rochester, a public charter school serving students in grades K-10, where she watched a student choir performance and a fifth-grade poetry class, heard the Pledge of Allegiance recited in Latin, and joined a teachers' roundtable on instructional practices. She then toured Dakota County Technical College, observing programs in veterinary technology, process technology and electrical linework that prepare students for in-demand industries, and sat down with members of the Minnesota State Legislature for a lunch roundtable on returning more education decision-making to the state and local levels. She ended the day at Rochester Community and Technical College alongside U.S. Representatives Brad Finstad and Pete Stauber, touring the campus's dental simulation, peace officer simulation and automotive training labs.
"Minnesota is the 44th stop on the Returning Education to the States Tour," McMahon said, adding that a truly responsive education system cannot be driven by federal mandates, and that from foundational civics and early literacy to high-tech medical and trade labs, success happens when local educators and state leaders have the autonomy to match programs to their communities' needs.
According to the department, the fifty-state tour is collecting best practices from teachers, parents and community leaders to compile into a toolkit for distribution to the states.
