HBO Confirms 'Girls' Revival: Lena Dunham and Original Cast to Return for Five-Episode Limited Run, Filming in 2027

NEW YORK — HBO this week confirmed that its acclaimed series Girls will return as a five-episode limited run. According to HBO Max's October 13 announcement and multiple media reports, creator and star Lena Dunham will write, showrun and executive-produce the new episodes and will reprise her role as Hannah Horvath. Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet are set to return as Marnie Michaels, Jessa Johansson and Shoshanna Shapiro, and Andrew Rannells will return as Elijah Krantz. Judd Apatow will serve as an executive producer alongside Dunham and others.
Production is scheduled to begin in 2027; no premiere date has been announced and plot details are being kept under wraps. According to NME and other outlets, the story will pick up roughly a decade after the original finale, with the characters approaching or entering their forties. Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO programming, said in a statement that the new run turns its gaze from the tumult of one's twenties to the milestone of turning 40. Adam Driver, who played Adam in the original series, is not among the cast members announced so far, and HBO has not said whether he will appear.
In a statement, Dunham said the team had always agreed they would only return if there was a specific story they were burning to tell, and that the characters began speaking to her again around her 40th birthday.
The original Girls ran for six seasons on HBO from 2012 to 2017, following four young women in New York. It earned 19 Emmy nominations and won two, and raised the profiles of Dunham, Williams and Driver, among others.
According to HBO Max, the return was announced in a video featuring the reunited cast.
