LOS GATOS — Netflix announced on October 15 that it has appointed former Disney executive Peter Rice as chief content officer, succeeding Bela Bajaria, who is leaving after nearly a decade at the streaming platform. According to Reuters, Rice will take over Netflix's content strategy across regions — series, films and live events — from October 26.

Rice previously served as chairman of Walt Disney Television and chairman of general entertainment content at the Walt Disney Company, which he left in 2022. He spent many years in television, including a long tenure running Fox's television businesses.

Bajaria joined Netflix in 2016 and became chief content officer in January 2023. Her tenure produced global hits such as Bridgerton and Squid Game, and expanded Netflix's live programming through multi-year partnerships with WWE and the NFL.

The appointment came a day after Netflix told staff in an internal memo that it was laying off about 6% of its workforce, roughly 1,000 employees, in its biggest round of job cuts since 2022, a move GSM reported on October 14.
