Reuters Survey: Only 14 of 26 Campaigns in Key Senate Races Unconditionally Pledge to Accept Election Results

WASHINGTON — Reuters reported on October 15 that it asked Democratic and Republican Senate candidates and their campaigns in 13 states that could decide control of the Senate whether they would accept the election results. Of 26 campaigns, 14 said they would accept unconditionally: nine Democrats, one independent and four Republicans. The midterm elections are set for November 3, and Republicans currently hold a 53-47 Senate majority.

In four contests — Alaska, Iowa, Maine and New Hampshire — both parties' campaigns pledged unconditional acceptance. In five others — Kansas, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio and South Carolina — Democrats signaled acceptance while Republicans gave conditional responses or did not address the question. In North Carolina, Georgia, Minnesota and Texas, at least one campaign did not respond to Reuters.

Maine Republican Senator Susan Collins was the only Republican candidate whose campaign addressed possible federal intervention, saying she would oppose efforts to undermine free and fair election outcomes. Ohio Republican Senator Jon Husted said he would accept any certified election that is run well and expressed confidence in Ohio's system. White House spokesperson Lauren Bis said in a statement that President Trump is committed to free and fair elections and reiterated his calls for voter ID and proof of citizenship.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted September 30 to October 5 found 76% of registered voters confident their ballots will be accurately counted, up from 69% in 2022.
