Federal Judge Dismisses Trump Administration Suit Over New York City 'Sanctuary' Laws

NEW YORK — A federal judge on October 15 dismissed a Trump administration lawsuit that sought to block New York City laws limiting local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, Reuters reported. U.S. District Judge Ramon Reyes, sitting in Brooklyn in the Eastern District of New York, found that the federal government lacked a valid basis for the suit.
Reyes reasoned that the city law barring police from detaining immigrants at federal request could not be challenged because New York state law already prohibits that practice. City rules restricting what custody information — such as release dates and whereabouts — local authorities may share about immigrants were also upheld, on the ground that federal law does not require state and local governments to share such information.
The judge rejected the administration's argument that federal law overrides the challenged city laws, concluding that the federal government cannot compel local governments to assist with immigration enforcement.
The Justice Department filed the case in July 2025 as part of the administration's challenges to so-called sanctuary policies. Reuters reported that the Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the ruling.
