27th Newport Beach Film Festival Opens Tonight: 'Frampton' Kicks Off the Festival as Peter Frampton Receives Icon Award
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — The 27th Newport Beach Film Festival opened on the evening of October 15 in Newport Beach, California, and runs for eight days through October 22. The opening-night film was Frampton, a documentary directed by Rob Arthur, screened at 7 p.m. at the Regal Edwards Big Newport theater at 300 Newport Center Drive. After the screening, rock guitarist Peter Frampton, the film's subject, received the festival's Icon Award and joined director Rob Arthur for a post-screening question-and-answer session.
According to the festival's opening-night announcement, the Icon Award was presented by Dean DeLeo and Robert DeLeo of Stone Temple Pilots. Frampton traces the musician's rise in the 1970s on the strength of the live album Frampton Comes Alive!, and his later years touring after being diagnosed with a degenerative muscle condition. Roger Daltrey, Bill Wyman, Sheryl Crow, Tom Morello, Ringo Starr and Alice Cooper are among the musicians who appear in the film. It had its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival in June and opened the Nashville Film Festival in September.
The Newport Beach Independent reported that the festival received more than 4,000 film submissions this year and will screen more than 300 narrative features, documentaries and shorts. The closing-night film, Behemoth!, starring Pedro Pascal, is scheduled for October 22. According to Screen Daily, this year's honorees also include Taraji P. Henson, who will receive the Artist of Distinction Award, and Jack O'Connell, who will receive the Outstanding Achievement in Acting Award, with honors events scheduled around October 18.
Frampton was born in Kent, England, in 1950 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024. His 1976 double live album Frampton Comes Alive! marks its 50th anniversary this year and has sold nearly 20 million copies worldwide. Earlier this year he released Carry The Light, his first album of all-new material in 16 years, co-written and produced with his son, Julian Frampton.
