September PPI and Retail Sales Land Together This Morning; Silver's 6.1% Plunge a Day Earlier Shows Markets Bracing Ahead of the Fed

The U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) for September and the September retail sales report will both be released at 8:30 a.m. Eastern on October 15, alongside the weekly initial jobless claims figures. Market consensus compiled by WEEX's TradFi daily puts September PPI inflation at about 5.3 percent year over year. The PPI tracks the prices producers receive for goods and services and, together with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) released on October 14, completes the inflation picture ahead of the Federal Reserve's October 27–28 policy meeting.

Markets were already volatile on the eve of the release. Silver futures fell 6.10 percent on October 14 to close at $55.55 an ounce, their lowest close in nearly 11 months, according to VT Markets. The move followed the September CPI report, which showed headline inflation rising 3.7 percent year over year — above the 3.6 percent forecast and August's 3.4 percent — with core CPI at 2.6 percent. A stronger dollar and rising Treasury yields after the hotter-than-expected data weighed on non-yielding precious metals, with silver hit hardest.

On the corporate calendar, TSMC reports earnings early on October 15, with consensus at about $4.52 in earnings per share; its SI chip demand, advanced-node capacity and capital-spending guidance are the focus. Interactive Brokers reports after the close, with consensus at about $0.67 a share on roughly $1.86 billion in revenue. Looking ahead, the Federal Open Market Committee meets on October 27–28, and the advance estimate of third-quarter GDP together with the September PCE price index is scheduled for October 29.
