Gold Rebounds More Than 1% Above $4,150 as Stocks Slide and the Dollar Retreats

Thursday, October 15, 2026 · Finance · GSM News

NEW YORK — Haven money flowed back into precious metals on Thursday, October 15, as U.S. stocks extended their slide and inflation data ran hot. Spot gold rose about 1.2% in the morning to trade around $4,155 an ounce, while December gold futures gained about 1.7% to roughly $4,178. Spot silver climbed about 1.9% to $56.70 an ounce, a day after plunging 6.1%, as GSM reported this morning.

The rebound recovered part of the ground gold lost after Wednesday's consumer price report, which showed headline CPI up 3.7% from a year earlier — a reading that initially lifted the dollar and Treasury yields and weighed on bullion. On Thursday the dollar index retreated about 0.5% from an 18-month high, and the 10-year Treasury yield fell to a three-week low near 5.08%, giving gold room to recover. Ongoing Middle East tensions and shipping risks around the Strait of Hormuz also kept haven buying active.

Even after the recent turbulence, gold remains about 26% below the record high of $5,597 an ounce set in January 2026. Attention now turns to the Federal Reserve's October 27–28 meeting: a rate hike would raise the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding gold, while a hold, combined with a softer dollar and lower yields, could keep supporting prices.
