Louisiana Man Sentenced to 170 Months After Traffic Stop Finds 473 Grams of Meth and Two Guns in His Truck

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Louisiana announced that Steven Dwight Savoy, 38, of Elton, Louisiana, was sentenced on October 15 by U.S. District Judge James D. Cain Jr. to 170 months (over 14 years) in federal prison for possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute and possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, followed by four years of supervised release. Savoy had pleaded guilty on July 20, 2026.
According to court documents, on January 8, 2025, a Louisiana State Police trooper stopped Savoy's older-model blue Ford F-250 on LA Highway 27 in Sulphur and found approximately 473 grams of methamphetamine, later confirmed through lab testing, along with a digital scale bearing methamphetamine residue in the center console. Officers also recovered a Kahr .40 caliber handgun between the driver's seat and the center console and a Radical Firearms .223/5.56 caliber rifle on the passenger seat, both near the drugs.
Savoy admitted he knew the rifle was in the vehicle and knowingly possessed it while transporting the methamphetamine, which he intended to sell. He also acknowledged that he was a convicted felon at the time, making it illegal for him to possess firearms.
U.S. Attorney Zachary A. Keller made the announcement. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Louisiana State Police investigated the case, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney John W. Nickel under case number 2:26-cr-00025.
