UK to Provide £17 Million Towards Repairs to Chernobyl Nuclear Plant

LONDON — The British government will provide £17 million in funding towards repairs to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which was damaged by a Russian drone strike last year, according to a roundup of U.K. government announcements on October 14. The plant, located in Ukraine, was the site of the 1986 nuclear accident, and its protective structure was damaged in the drone strike.
The same roundup reported that Chancellor of the Exchequer Healy said a tighter ban on Russia-linked shipping services is needed. The Chernobyl repair funding is the latest specific allocation announced by London in connection with Ukraine-related support and sanctions measures.
Repair and protective work at Chernobyl is being carried out by Ukraine together with international supporters. The plant has been shut down for many years, but its spent-fuel and containment facilities still require long-term maintenance and monitoring. Details of how the U.K. funding will be disbursed and the scope of works it will cover are to follow in subsequent British government announcements.
