Beshear Weekly Update: Medical Debt Relief for 130,000 Kentuckians; 953 Rental Homes Under Construction

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear issued his weekly update. On the economy, R/S-Godwin Truck Body Company in Floyd County will invest about $17 million in an expansion creating 65 full-time jobs.
On medical debt, the relief program Beshear created by executive order in September will forgive $250 million of medical debt for more than 130,000 Kentuckians; about 40,000 letters have gone out and $100 million has already been relieved, with no application required. On housing, all 953 rental homes announced in western Kentucky — described by the governor's office as the largest single housing announcement in state history — are under construction, five projects have begun leasing, and all are expected to be available by spring 2027; in Knott County, the Chestnut Ridge project with the Hope Initiative is building 20 homes, 12 of them starting this week.
On food assistance, Beshear said changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program will cause more than 80,000 Kentuckians to lose eligibility, including 24,655 children and 6,572 seniors, and that he has written to the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture and Kentucky's congressional delegation.
