Macao Overseas Chinese Association Marks 58th Anniversary With Banquet Attended by Nearly 500

MACAO — The Association of Returned Overseas Chinese Macao held a banquet on the evening of October 14 celebrating the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the 27th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland and the association's 58th anniversary, with nearly 500 government representatives and guests from various sectors attending, the Macao newspaper Click2Macao reported on October 15. The banquet was held at Man Wah Hin (Wan Hao Xuan). Attendees included the Secretary for Economy and Finance, representing the Chief Executive, officials from the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in Macao and the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Macao, and members of national and local bodies.
The association's president, a member of the Standing Committee of the National Committee of the CPPCC, said in his speech that the association will continue to support the Macao SAR government's administration, help Macao and mainland enterprises expand overseas and cooperate in both directions, and support Macao's integration into national development. He said the more than 60 million overseas Chinese and over 40 million returned overseas Chinese and their relatives form an important force, and that the association will use Macao's role as a platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries to promote economic, trade and cultural exchanges.
Secretary Wu praised the association's long-standing work uniting the overseas Chinese community and supporting the practice of 'one country, two systems', and encouraged it to continue serving as a bridge. The banquet included the association's contribution awards, volunteer training awards and performances, with the association's council chairman delivering the toast. Founded in 1968, the association is one of Macao's main overseas Chinese community organisations.
