Paddington The Musical to Make Australian Debut in Sydney in September 2027, Its Third Major Theatre District

SYDNEY — Producers announced on October 15 that Paddington The Musical will make its Australian debut at Sydney's Capitol Theatre in September 2027, making Sydney the third major theatre district in the world to stage the production, after London's West End and New York's Broadway. A ticket waitlist is now open; casting and exact dates for the Sydney season will be announced later.
The Australian production is presented by Sonia Friedman Productions, STUDIOCANAL, Eliza Lumley Productions and Australian producer Suzanne Jones of JONES Theatrical Group, with support from the New South Wales Government through its tourism and major-events agency Destination NSW. State Minister for Jobs and Tourism Steve Kamper welcomed the announcement, saying the Australian premiere would draw audiences from across Australia and overseas and support Sydney's hotels, restaurants and local businesses.
Based on Michael Bond's beloved books and the STUDIOCANAL film, the musical features music and lyrics by Tom Fletcher, a book by Jessica Swale and direction by Luke Sheppard. It opened at London's Savoy Theatre on November 30, 2025, and is currently booking through February 2028. At the 2026 Olivier Awards it won seven prizes, including Best New Musical and Best Director, and it also earned a record nine WhatsOnStage Awards. A Broadway production is scheduled to open at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on April 17, 2027, ahead of the Sydney premiere that September.
