California's Guangxi Natives Raise Nearly $80,000 for Flood Relief and Students in Hengzhou

California-based natives of Guangxi raised nearly $80,000 for flood relief in Hengzhou, Guangxi, and recently transferred the funds to the Guangxi Overseas Chinese Love Foundation for post-disaster reconstruction and student aid, China News Service reported on October 15. Liang Xingdong, founding president of the U.S. Datang Association, and Zheng Shaohong, vice president of the California Guangxi Association, traveled to Hengzhou on behalf of hundreds of donors from several California overseas-Chinese groups to visit affected families and students.
At Luocun Primary School in Hengzhou, the delegation handed supplies to 10 aided students and asked about their studies, families and current difficulties. Zheng said the drive was organized spontaneously and voluntarily by overseas Chinese donors, who also created a "donation signature wall" that will be donated to the Guangxi federation of returned overseas Chinese's history museum for preservation.
The delegation also met with local officials, including Liu Xiaoyu, deputy head of the Hengzhou municipal United Front Work Department and director of its overseas Chinese affairs office, to review how student aid is distributed, how affected families are being visited and assisted, and how damaged homes are being repaired or rebuilt, and toured reconstruction sites for homes and schools. Liang encouraged the students to turn present hardship into motivation to study.
