Connecticut Raises Electric Vehicle Rebate: CHEAPR Standard Incentive for New Battery Electric Cars Rises to $1,500 on Oct. 15

Thursday, October 15, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) announced on October 14 that the standard incentive under the Connecticut Hydrogen and Electric Vehicle Purchase Rebate (CHEAPR) program will rise effective October 15, 2026, with the standard rebate for a new battery electric vehicle increasing from $1,000 to $1,500. The program offers incentives to Connecticut residents who buy or lease an eligible new or used battery electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle from a licensed Connecticut dealership or manufacturer.

DEEP said demand for CHEAPR rebates surged in 2025 ahead of the loss of the federal tax credit on October 1, 2025, after which the department reduced the standard rebate. Since the federal credit expired, CHEAPR rebates have dropped by about 50 percent, a decline the department attributed in part to tariffs' effects on manufacturing costs and product availability, and to the gap created by federal policy changes.

With gasoline prices high, DEEP said returning the standard rebate to $1,500 can help address part of that gap and reduce upfront costs for cleaner vehicles.
