D.C. Mayor Highlights More Than $41 Million in Grants for Domestic Violence Survivors During Awareness Month

Thursday, October 15, 2026 · States · GSM News

Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser announced during Domestic Violence Awareness Month that the District has awarded more than $41 million across 45 grants supporting domestic violence survivors in Fiscal Year 2027, an increase of nearly 7 percent over the past two years, according to the mayor's office. The announcement was made with the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice, the Metropolitan Police Department and the Office of Victim Services and Justice Grants, ahead of Purple Thursday.

The investments support organizations providing victim advocacy, legal assistance, financial assistance, case management, trauma-informed mental health care, and medical and forensic services. In April, Bowser introduced the Protecting Victims Amendment Act of 2026 (B26-671), which would strengthen enforcement of protective court orders, bolster pretrial detention provisions for domestic violence offenders and protect victim privacy; District agencies are set to testify in support of the bill at an October 27 hearing of the Council's Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety.

Bowser said the District is focused on having the right policies and investments in place and building the right partnerships so residents know support and resources are available.
