Thursday, October 15, 2026 · States · GSM News

Iowa's two candidates for governor, Democrat Rob Sand, the state auditor, and Republican Zach Lahn, met on the evening of October 14 for their second televised debate at the KTIV studios in Sioux City. The debate began at 7 p.m. Central time, moderated by Matt Breen, Dave Price and Justin Rust, and was carried on KTIV and its streaming platforms.

The two are competing to succeed Republican Governor Kim Reynolds, who is not seeking another term. Their first debate, on October 6 at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, featured clashes over the economy, residency and the direction of state government. According to the Des Moines Register, a Real Clear Politics rolling average of polling shows Sand leading the race by about 9 percentage points; U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley campaigned with Lahn in Cedar Falls and Bondurant on October 13, crediting Republican governors with balancing the state budget and cutting taxes.

October 14 was also the first day of early voting in Iowa. Two more debates are scheduled: October 21 at Iowa PBS in Des Moines, and October 27 in Cedar Rapids, hosted by KCRG-TV9 and The Gazette. Election Day is November 3.
