Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Files New Lawsuit Over Dakota Access Pipeline

Thursday, October 15, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has announced new litigation seeking to shut down the Dakota Access Pipeline, according to Bakken Wire. In a statement, Tribal Chairman Steve Sitting Bear said the tribe's concerns about the pipeline have not changed in ten years, that it has fought to protect its water, treaty rights and people, and that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers moved forward without addressing those concerns.

The Dakota Access Pipeline has been in operation since 2017, carrying crude oil out of North Dakota's Bakken region, and is a significant piece of infrastructure for the state's oil and gas industry. Earlier this year the Army Corps issued an easement allowing the pipeline to cross the Missouri River upstream from the Lake Oahe reservoir.

Bakken operators are monitoring the new litigation. Legal disputes over the pipeline have continued since the large protests during its construction a decade ago, and the tribe says it will continue its defense until the pipeline is shut down.
