Federal Government Approves Nebraska's Restrictions on Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Purchases

The federal government has approved Nebraska's request to restrict what can be purchased with Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds, KCAU 9 reported on October 14. The approval came less than a week after Governor Jim Pillen signed the executive order putting the restrictions in place.
Under the new rules, Nebraska can ban the use of TANF funds, which are meant to help families with children on a short-term basis, for non-essential purchases. Those purchases include nicotine products, entertainment subscriptions and political contributions.
Critics of the measure say it only stigmatizes the use of federal assistance and that it is not necessary. TANF is a federal program that provides block grants to states for short-term cash assistance to low-income families with children, and states have some discretion over how the funds may be used within federal rules.
