Two Bridges on Rhode Island's East Bay Bike Path Reopen After Replacement; Structures Had Been Closed Since 2019

Two bridges along Rhode Island's East Bay Bike Path have been replaced and reopened, according to a GlobeNewswire release issued October 14. The 14.5-mile paved trail runs from Providence to Bristol and serves cyclists, pedestrians, commuters and visitors.
The two bridges, located in the towns of Barrington and Warren, were originally built in the 1880s as railroad bridges and converted for bicycle use in the 1980s. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) closed both structures in 2019 due to deterioration. During reconstruction, temporary detours, including bike path segments and boardwalks along adjacent vehicular bridges, were built to maintain access.
Bridge supplier Acrow said its modular steel bridges have been completed and opened, restoring safety and connectivity on one of the region's most heavily used recreational corridors and improving long-term resilience.
