South Carolina Nuclear Summit Focuses on Reusing Federal Land; Savannah River Site HB-Line Restart Discussed

Thursday, October 15, 2026 · States · GSM News

The third annual South Carolina Nuclear Summit drew more than 600 leaders to discuss positioning federal land for advanced nuclear and related infrastructure, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management Tim Walsh spoke after South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster and joined a panel on the role of federal property in the next phase of nuclear development.

Walsh said the Environmental Management program's 15 remaining legacy sites from World War II and Cold War missions are being revitalized to help expand energy production and advanced manufacturing, and that faster cleanup can accelerate transferring land to more productive uses. The panel, moderated by SRS Community Reuse Organization President and CEO Robbie Bennett, included representatives from Amentum, DC BLOX, Antares Nuclear, Oklo Inc. and Newcleo.

One topic was restarting the HB-Line at the Savannah River Site, which the department says is expected to accelerate plutonium disposition by 10 to 13 years and deliver up to $350 million in taxpayer savings.
