Washington and Finland Sign Cooperation MOU on Maritime, Aerospace and Clean Energy

On October 14, 2026, Washington Governor Bob Ferguson and Finland's Ambassador to the United States, Leena-Kaisa Mikkola, signed a joint memorandum of understanding at the National Nordic Museum in Seattle, setting a new framework for trade and collaboration between Washington and Finland. It is the first cooperative agreement with a foreign nation that Ferguson has signed since taking office in 2025.
The agreement identifies the industries and research areas that will be the focus of ongoing collaboration, including modern maritime industry safety, efficiency and sustainability; aerospace and defense innovation; clean energy generation, transmission and storage; sustainable forestry, fisheries and water resource management; and sustainable transportation, including sustainable battery development.
At the signing ceremony, the two sides said the agreement will launch a new era of partnership on research, academia, innovation and business. Washington is a trade and technology hub in the U.S. Pacific Northwest, while Finland has industrial strengths in maritime technology, clean energy and forestry, and the two regions will advance specific projects under the framework of the memorandum.
