Russian National Suvorov Extradited to New York on Sanctions-Evasion and Smuggling Charges

The Justice Department said on October 15 that Alexander Suvorov, 52, a Russian national living in Sweden, was extradited that day from Sweden to the Northern District of New York to face sanctions-evasion and smuggling charges. His initial appearance is set for 1:30 p.m. on October 16 in Albany before U.S. Magistrate Judge Paul J. Evangelista.
The extradition was announced by Acting U.S. Attorney John A. Sarcone III, FBI Albany Special Agent in Charge Craig L. Tremaroli, and Jonathan Carson of the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security in New York. The complaint alleges that from March 2022 to April 2023, Suvorov led an illegal procurement network that exported dual-use microelectronics to Russia through Hong Kong front companies, including GS Group Limited, paying by wire transfer; some components can be used in military communications, radar and precision-positioning systems.
He is charged with three conspiracies: international promotional money laundering, carrying up to 20 years in prison and a $500,000 fine; smuggling goods from the United States, up to five years and $250,000; and violating the Export Control Reform Act, up to 20 years and $1 million. The FBI and Commerce Department investigated; Assistant U.S. Attorney Rick Belliss and Garrett Coyle of the Justice Department's National Security Division are prosecuting, and the Office of International Affairs worked with Swedish authorities on the extradition. The Justice Department noted the charges are allegations and Suvorov is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
