Tesla Unveils New Roadster in McGregor: Thruster Demo Clears Cars in Motion, Musk Targets 2028 Production

McGREGOR, Texas — Tesla unveiled its redesigned second-generation Roadster on the evening of October 15 at SpaceX's McGregor test facility near Waco. According to TechCrunch and The Wall Street Journal, the demonstration saw the car use an underbody fan-suction system and cold-gas thrusters to drive up an inverted ramp, spin in the air and land back on the pavement, and later lift itself over a Cybercab, a Cybertruck, a Tesla Semi, a Model Y and a Model 3 while in motion. Tesla said at the event that the car went from 0 to 60 mph in one second.

Chief Executive Elon Musk said at the event that this is the car that will actually go on the roads. Engineering vice president Lars Moravy said the demonstration car's thruster system is connected to compressed-air tanks totaling 600 liters, the air can be recharged, and every usable void in the car is packed with carbon-fiber overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs). Musk said Tesla will build the car in 2028, but he did not name a price.

The car comes in three trims: Performance, a two-seater with active aerodynamics and a multi-mode suction system; Thrust, a two-seater with rear-mounted cold-gas thrusters enabling a sub-one-second 0-60 time; and Rocket, a single-seater with 10 cold-gas thrusters positioned around the car. Tesla says all three offer 300 miles of range and a top speed above 230 mph, with a new angular design close to the Cybertruck's language.

The second-generation Roadster was first shown as a concept in November 2017, when reservations opened at $50,000, or $250,000 for the 1,000-car Founders Series; production originally slated for 2020 was delayed repeatedly. Musk has previously said the car's revenue impact will be limited and that it is a halo vehicle for the brand.
