Wisconsin Certifies 2026-27 General School Aid at $5.58 Billion, Flat for a Third Year; 261 of 421 Districts to Receive Less

MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction published its certified general school aid amounts on October 15, setting the exact funding each district will receive for the 2026-27 school year. State law requires the certification by October 15 each year; the final figures replace the preliminary estimates issued on July 1.
Total general school aid stands at $5.58 billion, flat for a third consecutive year. General aid is the largest form of state support for Wisconsin K-12 public schools, distributed mainly through the state's equalization aid formula using prior-year enrollment, local property values and shared costs, and it offsets local property taxes under state-imposed revenue limits.
Because the total did not increase, district amounts shifted with local factors: of the state's 421 school districts, 261 will receive less state aid than the previous year, while 151 will receive more. Districts will budget for 2026-27 using the certified figures.
