El Dorado Serves as Arkansas' Capital for a Day on October 15, the 26th City under Governor Sanders

Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has signed a proclamation naming El Dorado, the seat of Union County, as the state's Capital for a Day on October 15. The proclamation, signed October 12, makes El Dorado the twenty-sixth city to host the program under Governor Sanders.

Under the governor's Capital for a Day program, senior state government officials join the governor in the designated city to meet with their local counterparts, and the seat of state government moves there for the day. GSM previously reported that Springdale served as the twenty-fifth Capital for a Day on October 8.

According to the proclamation, El Dorado was founded in 1843 by Matthew Rainey as the seat of Union County and incorporated on May 5, 1870; its name originates from the Spanish phrase meaning "the Gilded Road." Railroads in the late 1800s opened the door to industries such as lumber, and the completion of the area's first oil well, Busey No. 1, in January 1921 forever changed the city's trajectory — by 1923 it was home to dozens of oil companies and is still considered an energy hub in South Arkansas today. The city is home to the Murphy Arts District, the South Arkansas Arboretum, Oil Heritage Park and the historic Rialto Theater.
