Australia Names Offshore Site for Inpex-Led Bonaparte Carbon Storage Project

Australia on October 16 designated the West Peron undersea rock formation, off the country's north coast, as the storage site for the Bonaparte carbon capture and storage project proposed by Inpex, Japan's largest oil and gas producer. The project is designed to store 8 million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year.
Inpex proposes to permanently store up to 443 million tons of carbon dioxide deep beneath the seabed in the porous rock formation over a period of up to 35 years. The project would initially receive carbon dioxide from Inpex's Ichthys liquefied natural gas project, before expanding to serve multiple industrial facilities.
Resources Minister Madeleine King said carbon capture and storage would play an important role in reducing emissions from hard-to-abate industries and supporting Australia's transition to net zero. Australia has a legislated target of reaching net zero emissions by 2050.
