Canada Refocuses Express Entry Points on Canadian Experience and High-Wage Job Offers

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada announced changes to the Express Entry Comprehensive Ranking System on October 16, aimed at better aligning immigration selection with the country's economic and labour market needs. Starting November 3, 2026, additional points will be awarded to candidates with eligible Canadian work experience or a qualifying job offer in a high-wage occupation, including roles such as engineers and electricians.
From the same date, a labour market impact assessment (LMIA) will no longer be required for a qualifying job offer to receive the new points, or to meet job offer requirements under the Federal Skilled Worker Program and the Federal Skilled Trades Program. The department said it would continue to assess job offers for genuineness, with measures in place to guard against fraud.
Scores of candidates already in the pool will be recalculated automatically under the new system, a process that may take up to two weeks, during which invitation rounds will pause. Candidates seeking job-offer points must update their profiles before November 3. Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab announced the changes in Kitchener, Ontario.
