South Korea's benchmark Kospi index closed 2.05% higher at 5,668.05 on October 16, rising for the first time in eight sessions and ending a seven-day losing streak, its longest since September 2024.

Foreign investors were net buyers of 345.6 billion won of main-board shares, their first net purchase in nine sessions, according to Korea Exchange data, while institutions and retail investors were net sellers of 683.4 billion won and 484.7 billion won respectively. The tech-heavy Kosdaq jumped 4.46% to 794.78, triggering a buy-side sidecar during the session. Samsung Electronics rose 2.62% to 215,500 won, SK hynix gained 0.79% to 1,272,000 won, Hyundai Motor added 5.58% and Hanwha Aerospace advanced 7.77%.

The rebound followed a slide of roughly 20% over seven sessions, including a 7.57% plunge on October 15 to 5,554.22, the lowest close since April 7, as doubts over returns on super intelligence spending hammered chip stocks.
