Interior Begins Process to Restore Wyoming's Management of Greater Yellowstone Grizzly Bears

Friday, October 16, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

The U.S. Department of the Interior announced on Oct. 16 that it will begin the process of restoring management of grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem to the State of Wyoming, in a joint announcement by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon.

Burgum said Wyoming has invested significantly in recovering the Greater Yellowstone grizzly population for more than 50 years, and that the department will work with the state, Tribal partners and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to return science-based management to the state. Gordon said Wyoming has repeatedly proven it can manage its wildlife effectively, that the Greater Yellowstone grizzly has been fully recovered since 2003, and that the move is a crucial first step toward returning management authority to the state.

The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem spans parts of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho around Yellowstone National Park, and its grizzly population has long been at the center of debate over federal endangered-species protections. (GSM, based on a U.S. Department of the Interior announcement)
