Labor Department: Initial Jobless Claims Edge Up 1,000 to 199,000 in Latest Week
Washington — The Labor Department reported on October 15 that initial claims for unemployment insurance totaled a seasonally adjusted 199,000 in the week ending October 10, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's revised level of 198,000.
The previous week's figure was revised up from 197,000 to 198,000. The four-week moving average was 198,500, up 250 from the previous week's revised average of 198,250.
The weekly claims figures, compiled from state unemployment insurance agencies and published by the Employment and Training Administration, are a high-frequency gauge of layoffs in the U.S. labor market and are adjusted for seasonal factors.
