Georgia Bureau of Investigation Arrests Quitman Police Chief Accused of Keeping Donated Raffle Handgun

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) announced on October 15 that it has arrested and charged Quitman Police Chief Lawrence McGee, 44, of Quitman, Georgia, with one count of felony theft by taking and one count of violation of oath of office. McGee was arrested on October 14 and booked into the Brooks County Jail.
The case began on February 3, 2026, when the Brooks County Sheriff's Office asked the GBI to investigate a theft allegation involving McGee. According to the bureau's preliminary information, the Quitman Police Department received a donated handgun in January 2026 that was intended for use in a raffle for a regional traffic enforcement meeting; McGee instead kept the gun for himself and never included it in the raffle. An arrest warrant was issued after a Brooks County grand jury returned an indictment.
The case file has been turned over to the Southern Circuit District Attorney's Office for prosecution. The GBI asked anyone with information to call its Regional Investigative Office in Thomasville at (229) 225-4090, or to submit anonymous tips through the GBI Tipline at 800-597-TIPS (8477) or the bureau's online channels.
