Idaho Corrections Department Posts Photos of Retrofitted Firing-Squad Execution Chamber

Friday, October 16, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Idaho Department of Correction (IDOC) has posted updated photos of the retrofitted execution unit in F-Block at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution on its official execution chamber webpage, which is marked as last updated September 30. The photos show the execution chamber, an isolation cell and the prison exterior, and were reported this week by Idaho television stations KTVB and KIVI, on October 15 and 16.

The retrofit implements House Bill 37, which designates execution by firing squad as Idaho's primary method of execution beginning July 1, 2026, with lethal injection as the secondary method. The department says the F-Block unit was retrofitted to carry out firing-squad executions, with a dedicated execution space and witness areas, at an estimated cost of more than $900,000.

According to local reporting, Idaho has carried out three executions since 1976, most recently a lethal injection in 2012, and eight people are currently on the state's death row. The department says the execution team is made up of volunteer correctional staff, and that procedural details are not released for security reasons.
