Nebraska Governor Signs Executive Order Creating Statewide Public Safety Communications Task Force

Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen on October 15 signed Executive Order 26-24 at North Platte Fire Station 3 establishing the Statewide Public Safety Communications Task Force, effective immediately. Led by the Nebraska Military Department, the whole-of-government task force is charged with a top-to-bottom evaluation of the state's public safety communications ecosystem and must deliver actionable recommendations to the Governor's Office within 60 days.

Members include the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, the Nebraska State Patrol, the Department of Transportation, the Office of the Chief Information Officer, the State Fire Marshal, the Game and Parks Commission, the Nebraska Public Power District, the League of Nebraska Municipalities, the Nebraska Association of County Officials, and rural volunteer fire leadership. The group will audit geographic dead zones and structural vulnerabilities in radio coverage, review multi-vendor equipment compatibility, hardware end-of-life cycles and training gaps, and evaluate local, state and federal funding streams.
Pillen said at the signing that when first responders call for backup on the radio, that line must be clear and reliable across every square mile of Nebraska, noting in particular the needs of rural volunteer firefighters. Maj. Gen. Craig Strong, adjutant general of the Nebraska National Guard, said the Military Department is uniquely qualified to lead the effort, and State Patrol Superintendent Col. Bryan Waugh said the patrol will work alongside its partners to identify communication gaps and develop practical solutions.
According to the Governor's Office, the order responds to gaps in emergency communications highlighted during recent severe weather and wildfire events across the state.
