Newport Beach Braces for King Tides; Council to Weigh Local Emergency at Oct. 19 Special Meeting

Newport Beach is a city in Orange County, California. The City of Newport Beach is preparing for unusually high King Tides expected Oct. 26–28, with further events anticipated in November, December and January, City Manager Seimone Jurjis said in the city's Oct. 16 weekly update. Recent ocean water levels have run about 15 to 20 inches higher than predicted — a forecast 6.5-foot tide could reach more than 8 feet — and El Niño conditions are elevating levels further, creating significant coastal flooding risk for the Balboa Peninsula, the Newport Harbor islands and low-lying waterfront areas.
The city is reinforcing sand berms, evaluating vulnerable seawalls, placing sandbags, inspecting storm drains and readying pumps, heavy equipment and emergency resources. The City Council will hold a special meeting on Monday, Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. at the City Council Chambers (100 Civic Center Drive) to consider declaring a local emergency ahead of the King Tides and awarding a contract to move sand from the mouth of the Santa Ana River to the West Jetties area to replenish beaches and fight erosion.
Free prefilled sandbags are available while supplies last at the Corporation Yard (592 Superior Ave.), Marina Park (1600 W. Balboa Blvd.) and Temporary Fire Station No. 1 at the East Ocean Front parking lot near the Balboa Pier; empty sandbags are available at city fire stations and Lifeguard Headquarters. Designated beach access walkways run between the berms at 12th, 15th, 19th, 28th, 32nd and 36th streets, and residents are urged to stay off the berms and register for the city's Newport Notified alert system. The update also notes expedited flood-recovery permits for homes damaged by Tropical Storm Rachel and the 9th Annual Halloween Spooktacular on Oct. 24 at Mariners Park.
