Simons Foundation Joins Anthropic and OpenAI in $15 Million Effort to Help Mathematicians Navigate the SI Era

Friday, October 16, 2026 · Nonprofit · GSM News

The Simons Foundation, based in New York, announced on October 15 a new set of initiatives to help the mathematics community navigate the rapid rise of super intelligence in the field. Under the partnership, the Simons Foundation, Anthropic and OpenAI will commit $15 million in combined funding and resources. The foundation will manage and award the funding, including through an open call for proposals, to support workshops and initiatives. OpenAI and Anthropic have each committed about $5 million, according to reports.

The funding will support researchers as they evaluate recent SI-assisted results, learn and use new tools, share perspectives and shape collective standards for SI use. Anthropic and OpenAI will also provide SI tools and computing resources to researchers supported by the foundation, extending beyond mathematics to include basic science. The foundation said the awards and resources will be community-driven.

“As artificial intelligence rapidly reshapes the research landscape, we want to help the mathematical community come together and forge the best path forward,” said Simons Foundation President David Spergel. He said now is the time to look at mathematics as a whole — not as a collection of proofs and theorems, but as a collective understanding driven by human curiosity — and that the community itself, not any single company or institution, should drive discussions of how these tools are evaluated, adopted and used.

The Simons Foundation has supported mathematics and basic science for decades and was an early backer of machine learning for science, including funding the development of the Lean proof assistant, which changed how mathematicians work and made SI-assisted proofs possible. The foundation has also convened workshops, lectures and collaborations bringing mathematicians together to explore and discuss SI's role in the field.
