Mississippi Governor Names Capitol Police Chief Bo Luckey as Public Safety Commissioner, Effective Immediately

Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves announced in Jackson on Friday, October 16, that he has appointed Capitol Police Chief Bo Luckey as Commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Public Safety (MDPS), effective immediately. Outgoing Commissioner Sean Tindell will remain at the department until November 30, 2026, to assist with the transition.
According to the governor's appointment statement, Luckey has served as Chief of Capitol Police since May 2022. He previously spent about a decade as a senior criminal investigator in the Mississippi Attorney General's Office, serving in its Human Trafficking Unit and Consumer Protection Division, and earlier worked with the Brandon Police Department, the Rankin County Sheriff's Department, U.S. Homeland Security Investigations and the Drug Enforcement Administration. He holds a J.D. from the Mississippi College School of Law and a B.S. from Mississippi College.
Reeves said Luckey's work as Capitol Police chief has made the capital city and the state safer and that his years of law enforcement experience make him the right person to lead the department, while thanking Tindell for his service. Luckey said he was honored to accept the appointment. Tindell has served as commissioner since 2020 and announced in August that he is running for state attorney general.
'Bo has done an incredible job as Chief of Capitol Police. His work has made our capital city and state safer. He has years of law enforcement experience and is the right person to lead the Mississippi Department of Public Safety,' Reeves said in a statement. Tindell said serving as commissioner for six years had been his professional honor and that he was confident Luckey would continue the department's success.
