[Video] Survival Thriller 'Whalefall' Opens in 3,065 North American Theaters

Saturday, October 17, 2026 · Film · GSM News

20th Century Studios' survival thriller 'Whalefall' opened Oct. 16 in 3,065 North American theaters. Industry projections put its domestic opening weekend between $10 million and $12 million, against a reported production budget of $60 million.

Directed by Brian Duffield and based on Daniel Kraus's novel, the film stars Austin Abrams as a scuba diver trapped inside the belly of a sperm whale who must escape before his oxygen runs out. Josh Brolin, Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd appear in supporting roles. Abrams' previous 2026 release, the video game adaptation 'Resident Evil,' opened to $60.1 million domestically and has passed $324 million worldwide, a benchmark analysts have used to gauge his box-office standing.

'Whalefall' opens the same weekend as Paramount's 'Street Fighter' and a new adaptation of 'Sense and Sensibility' from Focus Features, and its longer theatrical run will depend on audience word of mouth. (GSM, based on reporting by The Hollywood Reporter and Boxoffice Pro)
