Afghan Immigrant Mohammad Afzal Rashid Appointed to San Juan Unified School Board

The San Juan Unified School District Board of Education in the Sacramento area selected Afghan immigrant Mohammad Afzal Rashid on Tuesday, October 13, to fill the vacant Trustee Area 1 seat, after interviewing five qualified candidates, according to the district's official announcement as reported by Nowruz Media. Rashid was sworn in at the same meeting and will serve until the next school board election in November 2028. Rashid has lived in the area for 30 years and is the father of two district graduates. He holds a law degree, previously taught economics, brings 17 years in California state government plus international policy and education experience, and heads the organization Immigrant Integration and Empowerment. He said his first priority is ensuring every student performs at grade level, particularly English learners and students with disabilities, and he plans to ask for annual reading and math progress reports broken down by school, grade and student group. He succeeds Abid Stanekzai, another Afghan immigrant who resigned in August after moving out of the district. The district's newcomer support team includes Farsi- and Pashto-speaking staff serving schools in Trustee Area 1, including Encina High School.
