CSBA and UCLA Launch Statewide Study of Superintendent Evaluation Practices

The California School Boards Association (CSBA) is leading a statewide study of superintendent evaluation practices in partnership with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), CSBA reported in its October 16 weekly update. A survey of current practices was sent on October 9 to all district superintendents and board presidents statewide and closes October 30. CSBA notes that superintendent evaluation is one of a board's most consequential governance responsibilities, yet there is no current statewide picture of how California boards approach it; findings will inform updated CSBA guidance and resources. The same update noted that 2025-26 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) results were released October 15, with 49.26 percent of students meeting proficiency in English language arts and 38.35 percent in math, both small gains over the prior year, and that the California School Dashboard update was released alongside the scores for the first time.
