FDA Update Clarifies Salmon Recall: Starfish Cold-Smoked Norwegian Salmon Slices Sold in Six States Over Listeria Risk

An updated company announcement posted by the FDA clarifies that the product recalled by Brooklyn, New York wholesale distributor Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. is Starfish Seafood Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon Sliced, in 227-gram (8-ounce) vacuum-sealed packages, UPC 4751048940099, lot D080-148, best-before November 27, 2027, originating in Latvia. The update corrects earlier reports describing a different seafood assortment. The salmon was distributed in New York, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio. The recall follows sampling by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets that identified potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, which the FDA says can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems; healthy individuals may suffer short-term symptoms including high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, and infection during pregnancy can cause miscarriage or stillbirth. No illnesses have been reported. Customers have been told to stop selling the product, and consumers may return it for a full refund; information: (718) 858-6720, Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. ET.
