Chicago Council Rejects Mayor's Housing Authority Nominees Again as Power Fight Drags On

Saturday, October 17, 2026 · City · GSM News

Chicago is a city in Cook County, Illinois. Chicago aldermen this week rejected another pair of Mayor Brandon Johnson's nominees to the board of the Chicago Housing Authority, extending a fight of more than a year over control of the nation's second-largest public housing authority, the Chicago Urban Daily News reported in its October 16 headlines.

According to the report, Johnson's critics believe the mayor wants a board that will oust CHA leader Keith Pettigrew. The housing authority provides public housing and vouchers for low-income Chicago families, and its board nominees require City Council confirmation.

Also on Thursday, suspicious-envelope scares hit the Illinois State Board of Elections' Chicago office, which was evacuated Thursday evening, and Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas' downtown office. The incidents are part of a nationwide FBI probe of more than 100 letters, some with threats and fentanyl traces, about three weeks before Election Day, the report said.
