Two-Alarm Fire Impacts 12 Apartments at Houston's Westwood Complex, No Injuries Reported

Houston is a city in Harris County, Texas. A two-alarm fire in southwest Houston left multiple apartment residents without homes on Friday afternoon, October 16, according to the Houston Fire Department. FOX 26 reported the fire at about 2 p.m. at a complex near Bissonnet Street and Forum Park Drive, just east of Beltway 8, where it reportedly started on a second-floor balcony.
Fire crews arriving at the scene saw fire and smoke coming from the roof, and the incident was upgraded to a two-alarm response to bring more resources. Officials said it is believed someone was barbecuing on the balcony and heavy wind caused the fire to spread, but the cause remains under investigation.
Officials said the fire was declared under control at about 2:45 p.m. Twelve units were impacted, and the American Red Cross is helping displaced residents. No injuries were reported.
The Houston Fire Department said the cause of the fire remains under investigation and the balcony barbecue account has not been confirmed. Housing assistance for displaced residents and repairs at the complex are being handled by the property management and the Red Cross.
