Harry Reid International Airport Plan Would Grow Terminal 1 From 39 to About 65 Gates in Multibillion-Dollar Clark County Overhaul

Las Vegas — Las Vegas is a city in Clark County, Nevada. Clark County aviation officials have outlined a multibillion-dollar modernization plan for Harry Reid International Airport to the Clark County Commission, a phased overhaul that would grow Terminal 1 from 39 gates to about 65 while the airport stays open throughout construction. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Clark County Director of Aviation James Chrisley told the commission that much of the airport was designed for the passenger volumes and aircraft of the 1990s and early 2000s, and that Las Vegas's rise as a global destination for sports and mega-events requires facilities capable of handling today's traffic and future growth.

The biggest piece is Terminal 1. Alongside a new wing of roughly 11 gates on the site of the demolished old Terminal 2, the A and B gates — now housed in separate satellite buildings — would be replaced by a single straight pier, growing from 23 gates to about 33. Terminal 3 would be renamed Terminal 2, and a new administration building and parking garage would follow. Taxi and rideshare staging is set to move, adding about 330 parking spaces at peak times.

Some changes are closer. The airport's automated trams, which have run about 2 million miles in a decade, are due to be replaced by the end of this year. New escalators and elevators at Terminal 1 are meant to end the walk across a busy taxi lane between baggage claim and the garage. On the west side, the county wants a new U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) facility and a charter ramp for international private jets arriving for events such as Formula 1. A new airport fire and rescue station would start construction next year and finish in 2028, and the A and C gates are slated for more restrooms and food and drink outlets.

Reid is now the country's eighth-busiest airport. An earlier county timeline, reported in June, pointed to a redeveloped Terminal 1 in late 2034 and warned the airport could hit its 65-million-passenger ceiling by 2033. A proposed second commercial airport in the Ivanpah Valley, about 30 miles south of Las Vegas, is still at least a decade away, and officials describe the Reid overhaul as the bridge to that two-airport system. There is no finalized timeline or cost estimate yet; the county expects to announce a price tag next year and will seek federal money for much of the work.
