Los Angeles Council Votes to Limit Parking Commission's Authority Over Housing on City Lots

Los Angeles is a city in Los Angeles County, California. On October 16, the Los Angeles City Council voted 10-1 to direct the city attorney to draft an ordinance limiting the Board of Transportation Commissioners' authority over affordable housing developments proposed for city-owned parking lots.
The motion, introduced in September by Councilmembers Eunisses Hernandez and Ysabel Jurado, would expand existing exemptions to cover parking lots authorized for temporary or permanent use as housing or homeless services programs. City-owned property approved by the council and mayor for affordable housing would come under the Los Angeles Housing Department, while the Department of Transportation would continue to maintain and operate a property until a ground lease or similar agreement is established and the Housing Department gives 30 days' notice.
In her motion, Hernandez said ambiguous wording in the administrative code has been used to halt or slow affordable housing development on city-owned land. The council approved the motion without discussion.
