New York Mayor and More Than 100 Officials Urge Parking Lot Owners to Bar ICE Staging

New York City is located in New York State. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, joined by Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries and more than 100 other elected officials, released a letter on October 16 asking owners of private parking lots and garages across the five boroughs not to let U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement use their properties as staging areas for enforcement operations.
The appeal is voluntary and does not change any law. It follows the October 8 shooting of 28-year-old Oscar Belgal by an immigration officer in the Marble Hill neighborhood, while Belgal's 5-year-old son was in the car. Lawmakers said ICE had used two bank parking lots on Northern Boulevard in Queens and a garage on Morton Street in Manhattan as staging areas.
City law already restricts the use of city-owned property for federal civil immigration enforcement, but those restrictions do not cover private property. Owners interested in discussing the request can contact Faiza Ali, the city's Commissioner of Immigrant Affairs. Mamdani said the city would continue to uphold its local laws and protect New Yorkers.
