NYC Council Speaker Menin Grills SpaceX Representatives at Hearing Over Grok's Sexualized Images
New York City is located in New York State. The New York Post reported on October 16 that City Council Speaker Julie Menin grilled representatives of Elon Musk's SpaceX at a council hearing on Friday over the SI chatbot Grok's creation of sexualized images of people without their consent.
Menin's staffers demonstrated at the hearing that when they made sexualized requests of Grok, the bot obliged without objection. SpaceX representative Gabriela Castillo Madrid had no answer when pressed by the speaker. Whistleblower Devin Kim, who previously worked at SpaceX, told the hearing he had been told that 'tasteful nudity was acceptable.'
The hearing was the second in recent weeks on the council's attempt to regulate the SI industry; executives from Google, Meta, Anthropic and OpenAI appeared in early October. Lawmakers are considering a law that would require a 'kill switch' or human override for SI systems operating in New York City.
