The 2026 Woody Guthrie Prize event was held on Friday, Oct. 16, at Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where singer and actress Bette Midler received the prize. Shaw of the Woody Guthrie Center said the organization was delighted to recognize Midler not only for her remarkable artistic achievements, but also for her enduring commitment to creating a more just, more inclusive and more hopeful world, just like Woody Guthrie himself.

The evening featured remarks from Shaw and members of the Guthrie family, the award ceremony, and a conversation between Midler and music journalist Rona Elliot, concluding with a solo acoustic performance by rising country star Bryan Andrews. The event is the Woody Guthrie Center's most important fundraiser of the year, supporting its educational programs, events and exhibits.

Beyond her entertainment career, Midler founded the New York Restoration Project in 1995. The conservancy — New York City's largest private land trust — owns and manages 52 community gardens across the five boroughs, maintains more than 80 acres of parkland, and, in collaboration with the New York City Parks Department, has planted more than 1 million trees.
