'Street Fighter' Opens With $12.5 Million Friday Including Previews, Eyes $30 Million Weekend

Paramount's video-game adaptation Street Fighter opened in North American theaters on Oct. 16, playing in 3,575 locations. According to Deadline, the film grossed about $12.5 million on Friday including Thursday previews; its $4 million preview haul is the second-biggest ever for a fighting-game adaptation, behind only Mortal Kombat II's $5.2 million. The film is tracking toward an opening weekend of roughly $30 million, which would be a franchise best.
Directed by Kitao Sakurai, the film is set in 1993: estranged fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are recruited by the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) for the next World Warrior Tournament, behind which lurks a deadly conspiracy. Jason Momoa plays Blanka, Cody Rhodes plays Guile, Joe "Roman Reigns" Anoa'i plays Akuma, David Dastmalchian plays M. Bison, and Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson plays Balrog.
The PG-13 film runs 1 hour 59 minutes, carries a reported production budget of $82 million, and is playing in IMAX and RealD 3D. Its Rotten Tomatoes audience score stands at 80%, well above its critics' score, and its theatrical legs will depend on word of mouth. (GSM, based on reporting by Deadline and Koimoi)
