Ireland Raises €1.25 Billion in Bond Sale as Borrowing Costs Hit 3.5%

Saturday, October 17, 2026 · World News · GSM News

Ireland's National Treasury Management Agency has raised €1.25 billion through a bond auction, at a borrowing cost of 3.5 per cent. Despite elevated volatility in global bond markets, the fundraising was completed, suggesting sustained appetite for Irish sovereign debt among institutional investors.

The 3.5 per cent cost exceeds many household mortgage rates. Borrowing costs across the eurozone have risen from the ultra-low levels of previous years as monetary policy tightened and investor expectations shifted, and the cost of servicing Ireland's national debt has increased as a result.

The funds will support the State's financing requirements for the current fiscal year. Ireland maintains one of the stronger fiscal positions in the European Union and investment-grade credit ratings, and its ability to access capital markets at competitive rates even during periods of stress reflects investors' view of Irish government bonds as a relatively safe asset within the eurozone.
